Much Canine Carousing, 2014

Dear readers, though my dear and wonderful little Vulpe is a Romanian street dog of no known date of birth, when we went to collect her from the rescue organisation on 2nd September 2012 at around 4 months old, we decided that 2nd May would be her birthday from then on.

When she was 1, my ex and I filled a brand new paddling pool with pans full of water, carried from the kitchen one at a time, because we didn’t have a hose, and then we watched as she completely failed to understand the concept and wandered back into the living room <3

She also had a pretty nifty doggy birthday cake, though no-one to share it with.

This year, with Vulpe and me living alone, I wanted to make a big silly fuss and throw a doggy birthday party for her. I planned pretty far in advance and invited Vulpe’s poochy pals over, as well as the small (but growing) number of humans that she’s comfortable being around.

Readers, it was the best fun EVER, and I’m doing this every year from now on!

This was a perfect opportunity for the humans to eat lots of food and have a few beers on a sunny afternoon, and for all the pooches to tire themselves out and have a good ol’ day of fun and treats. I am definitely doing this every year! My flat is fairly small but my back yard is pretty big and it’s a perfect space to throw lots of toys into and let the dogs all have a good romp.

Making the doggy birthday cake was easy! Here’s how I did it:

Ingredients

  • 4 medium sized sweet potatoes, chopped
  • 1 or 2 salmon fillets
  • 1/2 cup plain wholewheat flour
  • 1 tub low fat cream cheese
  • various doggy treats for decorating

Boil the sweet potato until soft. Drain and mash with a tablespoon of the cream cheese. Bake the salmon, flake and mix into the sweet potato. Add the wholewheat flour and turn the mixture into a non-stick cake tin (or use greaseproof paper to line the tin).

Bake for around 10 mins at 180 until the top starts to brown very slightly. Let the cake cool, then turn out onto a large plate. Spread the rest of the cream cheese on top of the cake and add treats to decorate.

  1. Happy Birthday Vulpe! It was mine yesterday! May is the best month!
Looks like you all had a great time, and the cake recipe is very clever! I’m baking myself an extra chocolatey cake today :)
